<image:title>Posts - Underground Perimeter Control Basics - Perimeter control uses a one or a combination of smaller diameter drillholes or charges, reduced charge weight, tighter spacing and burden, decoupling, accurate delay timing, and adjusted timing and sequence to reduce the chance of backbreak, overbreak, and dilution.</image:title>

<image:title>Posts - Blast Vibration Basics Post #3 - Analogy</image:title>
<image:caption>Geophone sensors use the same concepts that are used when you create a magnet out of a nail, battery, and a bit of wire. If you ever worked on this science project at home, you know that the wire is coiled around the nail and connected to two battery terminals, like the image on the left. When connected to the battery, current will be introduced to the wire. The current in the wire creates a magnetic field, which then polarizes the nail and makes it magnetic. A geophone sensor operators with the same concepts. The coil moves along a magnetic cylinder. But because the cylinder is magnetic, unlike the nail, the magnet creates a current in the coil. The data logger measures the current and converts it to particle velocity. source: http://www.stefanklocek.com/simple-electromagnet/</image:caption>

<image:title>Posts - Blast Vibration Basics Post #2 - Analogy</image:title>
<image:caption>Particle velocity is often compared to a floating bobber. If you throw a rock into a pond next to a bobber, waves or ripples will emanate out from where the rock impacted. The impact of the rock is analogous to a blast and the waves are analogous to blast vibrations. Blast vibrations radiate out from a blast, the same as the ripples on the pond. The bobber can be compared to a seismograph’s geophone. The bobber is moving in one location; wherease, a geophone measures vibrations in one location. The velocity that a bobber moves up and down is analogous to the particle velocity of a vibration (the velocity that the geophone moves up and down or side to side when a vibration passes). The distance the bobber moves is displacement, which is not measured by a geophone, but it can be calculated using the particle velocity and frequency (see below). The frequency is number of times that the bobber moves up and down in one second. Image source: pinterest/svgsprite.com</image:caption>

<image:title>Posts - Blast Vibration Basics Post #1 - Analogy:</image:title>
<image:caption>Compare a blast to hammering a nail into a wall to hang a picture frame. In this analogy, the hammer hitting the nail is the source of the vibration. If you place your hand on the wall, you can feel the vibration of the hammer hitting the nail even though the vibration doesn’t damage your house. You can also hear it. A blast is analogous to the hammer hitting the nail. The blast causes vibrations in the ground and the blast can be heard by those nearby.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nathan Rouse, PE, PhD Nathan earned a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering (‘09), Masters of Science in Explosives Engineering (‘10), and PhD in Mining and Explosives Engineering (‘15) from the University of Missouri-Rolla (Missouri S&T). He was active in the department in mucking, mine rescue, student design, and the SME and ISEE student chapters. Nathan started working for Morgan Worldwide Consultants (MWC) in Lexington, KY in 2010. In 2014, MWC was acquired by Respec, Inc out of Rapid City, SD. He continued working in Lexington for Respec until 2019 when he joined DynoConsult, the consulting team for Dyno Nobel, as a principal consultant. He left Dyno to pursue a longtime dream and form his own company in January 2023. Nathan’s career has been focused on drill and blast engineering and consulting. He has managed drill and blast projects for surface and underground mining and quarrying operations globally. He loves the opportunity to travel to a new site, meet new people, and work with new teams to improve their operational outcomes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rob Bush, PE Rob is a licensed Professional Engineer with +15 years of diverse industry experience in technical, operations, and commercial leadership roles, primarily in the mining industry. These roles have had global reach, with particularly extensive experience in Latin America and Spanish fluency. He has spent the majority of his career providing technical blasting support to mining and civil engineers, and the projects they cared for, in surface and underground mining, tunneling, and other large unique civil projects. This included leading the implementation of the latest blasting technologies, such as electronic detonators and underground gassed emulsion pumping systems, in projects and geographies where they had never been used. Rob has always maintained a curiosity for new technologies and techniques that optimize heavy industry, solving real problems at the workfront and improving the lives of the engineers and operators that confront them.</image:caption>
